    Whats the fastest boots???

  • @RogerBialous
    @RogerBialous 2 дня назад

    Lots of good thoughts in here. I'm a goldilocks kinda guy. I like my boots not too stiff, but too flexy either. Maybe that will evolve. As far as I can tell, the only place rigid or nearly rigid boots shine is on vertical or nearly vertical rock (so, really alpine climbing), kicking steps snow climbing, ice climbing, and anytime you have crampons on (again, a rarity in my hunting world). To each their own. Light weight is the best, if you can still get what you need out of the boot. The only thing I'd challenge you on is the climbing zone on some boot outsole toes. You say that they come from climbing and I agree. Then you say that they are for smearing, which they may help some with, but I believe they are designed for and are most helpful with edging, as the solid zone is much easier to place on a small toe hold and is much less likely to collapse and melt off small ledge or knob or other toe hold than the small tread blocks and voids of a more traditional lug sole. Thanks for all the good work. I've learned a lot from you fellas.

    This seems to be the new thing. I don't doubt the effectiveness of a fast enough bullet with enough 'length' to drill deep. I will likely keep shooting light solids (Barnes etc) for the foreseeable future. I built my 7 SAUM with a similar back-calculation (Minimum cartridge that would keep my chosen 145 gr LRX bullet above 2000 fps out to 550 yards - 100 yards farther than I ever want to shoot a big game animal). So far it has served me very well. I get the small sample size thing but I also shoot a lot and am realistic about my abilities. The fragmenting bullet thing sounds great for killing. How does it do for meat loss and do any of the fragments make it into the meat we eat? I've heard both sides of the lead argument and haven't seen anything conclusive.

    Thank you for this tremendous content. So if you’re consistently hunting in ankle deep to knee-deep snow, do you continue to wear a synthetic boot but just wear a thicker sock? Of course, wearing a gator in these conditions is necessary.

    • @ExoMtnGear
      @ExoMtnGear 9 дней назад

      Absolutely, I will continue to wear a synthetic boot and I'll just wear a thicker wool sock if the shoe allows room for it. A big mistake though would be put on a really thick sock and have to stuff / jam your foot into the boot causing a really tight fit. You need an air gap between your foot and the inside the shoe to create warmth.

    • @velvetvelvet7689
      @velvetvelvet7689 10 дней назад

      @@ExoMtnGear I had the opportunity to compare them on a hunt. About 350 yards away was a group of 4 horses, one of which was completely black. The background was a dense forest, and in darkness, with the only binocular that could be seen the black horse was with the Zeiss. The difference in lenses was noticeable, to the point of not being able to distinguish an animal at that distance and at dusk and with little contrast. Excuse me, but that already puts the NL Pure out of competition. If that's not enough for you to say that one is better than the other, I don't know what would. But let's move on to technical data: NL 159m@1000m vs HT 136m@1000 (see 20m or so doesn't make a difference for me at that distance). NL 840gm vs HT 750gm (HT almost 100gm less weight). NL Light Transmission 91% vx 95% of the HT. Believe me, the difference can be seen with the naked eye by looking at one and then the other. Do you really still think that the Swarovski NL are better than the Zeiss HT? I can understand that you are a Swarovski fan, but try to get some Zeiss HTs and do the comparison yourself. Tell me later.

    So I hunt as an Alaska resident and go after everything from sheep to brown bear. I always feel vulnerable with a bolt gun when I have heightened potential of grizzly encounters. Mainly when I’m walking into sheep country on a river bed or thick brush. My idea to fix that would be to build a 7-8lb 16”-18” 6mm arc AR-15. That way with a 108gr ELDX I should be able to take everything up to moose out to 600 yards with the benefit of timely follow up shots, less recoil, and the ability to quickly engage a bear either from my tent, or in brush with 5+ shots if needed. Is there any downsides to using an AR build for what I’m trying to do?

      Are you of the belief that 284 win (which has dominated FClass popularity for a while) is a big cartridge for shooting in 20# f-class guns?

    • @egrootveld
      @egrootveld 6 дней назад

      @@brodychapman8348 no, I was saying that F-class shooters *do* shoot smaller cartridges. I'm not a benchrest guy, but I'd guess a 20lb+ .284win is less recoil than a 6CM hunting weight riflle.

    Why aren’t you making boots? You guys could make the best backcountry hunting boots on the market. I understand you want to stay a small business but I think you should consider it. You clearly have a better understanding of what hunters need than any actual footwear company out there.

    Years ago, I stopped using my 300 Rum, 300 WM, 28 Nos. I now use 6.5 PRC for deer and sometimes elk, and 7 PRC for elk. My biggest reason is BC and shot placement advantages with less recoil, and if needed a follow up shot. Not to mention less meat waste from internal shock to muscles. I did this because what I discovered out in the field. Unfortunately, many hunters don't get to have numerous amounts of western hunting experiences to see what they really need and don't need.

    If you have your rifle, trecking poles, and tripod with you, do you put your tripod on the same side as your spotting scope?

    • @ExoMtnGear
      @ExoMtnGear 14 дней назад

      Often, yes, the tripod and spotter will be on one side, the rifle and trekking poles on the other side. Spotter inside the full-length pocket, tripod is secured in the outside, with legs in the lower stretch pocket.

      Awesome, thanks. I wasn’t sure if you’d want your spotter and tripod rubbing against each other, same for your riflescope and trekkers but I assume they’re cinched down pretty securely

    Thanks for the written summary on your website! I’m looking forward to the second episode. My family has an oryx and Barbary sheep tag this year, and in my research I’ve seen people mention both of those animals are extra “tough” and that you need extra knock down power. Since they’re both from Africa their vitals are in a different spot (more forward), I think they have gotten their “tough” reputation from hunters shooting in the wrong spot, elk/deer vitals. Like you guys mentioned, most of the animals we hunt in Northern America are pretty similar

      I've killed 2 Oryx, so my sample size isn't great, but I do have some experience. The first with a 308 with match ammo (ELD-M), the second with a 300PRC with ELD-X. Both within 100 yards broadside. Both first shots were double lungs. The 308 absolutely dropped it where it stood. The 300 took 2 follow-up shots to finish it off, but it didn't go more than 5 yards. I don't think they are "tough" animals, but people tend to use bullets that don't expand nearly rapidly enough. An Oryx is smaller than a cow elk. Aoudad are not particularly tough either. I've killed 4 (2 male and 2 female). And none of them moved after the first shot. They are really small. The ranch owner culls them with a 22-250.
